Live from Fletching, the BBC local news inform us that 2 societies are in trouble. Those bangers ain't cheap any more !! Plus volunteers just want to be in the carnival parade and don't want to work all year. Good news eh ? Maybe a month of other villages in the area holding their own nights doesn't actually help either.

Is that such bad news. Years after year, the same old tedious thing.

What societies are in trouble? The thing is Bas, unless you die, it's the same old stuff year after year- spring, summer, autumn and all that. On the other hand we can reclaim the streets once in a while, blazing torch in hand and enjoy being alive.

'Reclaim the streets' Tom? You jest. The same procession year after year on one day, the same relentless brainless 'patriotism' is not 'reclaiming the streets'.

It felt that way to me, I loved it. I'm surprised they haven't banned it by now using health and safety regulations or climate catastrophobia. Patriotism is a natural human feeling not to be confused with jingoism. Tradition is another human feature which is very useful though often misused. Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. Long live bonfire.

Bonfire in Lewes means many different things to many people eg tradition, community, family, anarchy, approaching winter, fire, carnival (sorry if that one particularly upsets some people), fun etc. I appreciate basil that some people don't like it at all. Personally I have no problem with it evolving and it is likely that societies will come and go. Please try to at least accept it basil rather than just being miserable about it. A lot of people have a good time if for different reasons.

These cultural events get many thousands of people off their arses, flicking around their ipads, and get them actually out there connecting with each other. I don't know how many equivalents to this festival there are currently in England - but I imagine they are in decline, and so hopefully we can appreciate and cherish this rare example of a cultural festival - we run a B and B - and people from ALL OVER THE REST OF THE WORLD FLY HERE TO APPRECIATE IT .

Love the open invitation! It's great to see a space where people can freely share their thoughts. Looking forward to hearing... more

Those who expect to reap the blessings of freedom must, like men, undergo the fatigue of supporting it.
