late trains

I'm thinking of moving to Lewes but would still need to go out in London from time to time for various reasons. Trains run nice and late but the timing seems crazy to me - either 22.47 or 00.05, how come there isn't one in between? Either have to leave v early or get home half past one. Has this always been the case? If not, was there any protest when it changed? Is there a reason?

That's a gap of less than an hour and 20 minutes. I hardly think that's excessive at that time of night.
If that's not sufficiently convenient for you, because you have to leave before 11pm or wait until middnight, then go out in Lewes or live in London. You can't reasonably expect urban public transport and city social life, while enjoying living in a beautiful country town.

The 00:05 train seems fine to me, whats the problem? You get to stay out until a decent hour and getting home at 1:30 isn't that bad, I've arrived home much much later then that many a time!

You could always drive to Haywards Heath and get the train from there, the Brighton ones run a shade more often at night I think.

Or yes, not move miles out of London into the countryside.

As others have said, last train is 0005 *except on Sundays and Bank Holidays* when the last train is 2247 - watch out for that one. If you want to get back later and you're drinking, go back to Brighton and get a to taxi to Lewes for about £20. Or move to somewhere on the Brighon mainline.
