I've heard a rumour about Pelham House going down the tubes.

That is exactly what I heard too, is there any fact to it?

I heard that too - apparently the chappie who bought it is having troubles with financing

After reading Tripadvisor.com it should be the White Hart that should close down. If you have a spare 5 mins well worth reading - it's got some car crash awful reviews.

I went to an awful wedding reception there once - frozen pork pies on the so called buffet!

I did wonder if the Pelham House rumour was a bit of confusion bewtween the hotel itself and Circa, who called the receivers in some time ago.
I agree about the White hart - the smell that emanates from there most days is hideously reminiscent of school dinners!

I used to go to a Society annual dinner at the White Hart and they would ship the waiting staff in from the local old folks home with shakey hands, you were lucky not to get your dinner in your lap. Dirty plates, mouldy puddings, wine served with no lable on (sorry it came off when it was being chilled in the ice bucket!) and even a drawing pin in the profiteroles - awful!!!
I also know that the Crown lease is up for sale at the moment but is being sold as a going concern.

I had my wedding reception at the White Hart, and everything was really nice. I have been to a couple of other parties/wedding receptions there, and both the sit down meals and buffets were really good. I would definately have a party there again.

I know someone who woke up in the morning at the White Hart to find a used plaster (not theirs) stuck on their leg...
The whole place is slapdash and mouldering, when it could be a jewel. Such a shame.

The CSBS dinners at the White Hart used to be so bad they were funny, one friend complained about the waitresses thumb on his meat only to be told "I don't want to drop it again!" he later had gravy poured down his back.
Another friend complained, politely, about the state of the gym and was screamed at by the owner.
it should be the best hotel in Lewes but it's dire.

Is it true that some bloke checked into the White Hart just before the eclipse in 1999 and, believing it was going to be the end of the world, ran up an enormous bill then had to leg it when armageddon failed to materialise? If not it ought to be.

The White Hart is over-rated, over-priced and the food's over-cooked. A great shame, as it should be a lovely hotel.

Hi Taff, yes it's all good, I've got to butcher a reindeer I bought off the Sami today, anyone know of a good "how to" website?

One thing the White Hart has got going for it is having a coffee on the terrace and looking across to the Downs.

I'm amazed that the White Hart has never been taken over by a good chain/ hotelier and completely revamped. It's got so much going for it with its location, terrace and view of the Ouse valley, as well as the atmospheric front bar.

Excellent point. I guess the owner just does not want to sell. Maybe the priority at the hotel is the welfare of the staff, not the customers? Any staff on the forum care to comment?
