COUNCIL tax payers across the Lewes district will pay around 10p a week more for services provided by the district council.
On Tuesday (February 17) Lewes District Council agreed to increase its part of the council tax bill by 2.9 per cent.
A Band D property will be charged £187.72, equivalent to an extra 10p per week, for services which include recycling and rubbish collection.
Cllr Ann De Vecchi, the leader of Lewes District Council, said: ''We've kept council tax as low as possible, despite the government cutting funding for local councils.'
The council tax bills also pay for the services of the county council, the police, fire and rescue service, and any local town or parish councils.
Last week East Sussex County Council announced an increase of 3.5 per cent, while Sussex Police Authority and East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service have agreed increases of 4.7 per cent and 3.9 per cent respectively.
The overall council tax bill for an average Band D property will be 1,597.89, an increase of 3.7 per cent, an extra 1.09 per week.

What about it? It's still there isn't it? I'm pleased anyway, that's a low council tax increase compared to the others.

Yeah - the county one's going to be much more than this. And they've moved my grandads bus pass back to 9am so he can make the doctors.

ESCC doesn't have any money invested in Icelandic Banks.
Lewes District Council has a million £'s which I expect LDC councilors led by Ann De Vecchi will dip into their own pockets to replace.

Instead of raising income/capital-gains/stamp-duty/fuel&alchohol/any-word-here taxes by even more, every year central govt cuts funding to all essential services. These include the NHS, railways, roads, power and water infrastructure, education and last but not least local councils. In this way the service provider gets the blame. For many people council tax is higher than income tax. The country is becoming more and more divided into the wealthy 'haves' (those on state benefits) and the 'have nots' (those taxed to the hilt because they are foolish enough to work and don't claim benefits).

Well said SHS! - your comment about the "haves" and the "have-nots" is particularly astute - I could not have put it better myself.
