I have a question, why is our lovely Lewes bonfire night celebration not listed on the What's on? is it just a bit too obvious...

Maybe its an oversite, but I would hope its because it should be kept for local people. The influx of so many thousands of people from far and wide, is the biggest threat to the future of Bonfire.
Believe me, locals know when its on

Is it the ultimate desire that ALL residents process on the night and there is no one on the pavements at all?

Not really as if every single resident processed then the processions would be way too long and unmanageable. It's hard enough controlling the amount of members there are anyway!

Could be fun - as long as no real flames are involved? - as my stuffing is very old and dry and... well... I'm sure I need say no more (I upset easily )

The date is hardly a secret. You'll notice that Christmas isn't listed up there either, or New Year's eve.

Every year the societies go out of their way to discourage tourists from coming to Lewes for Bonfire. It's never advertised and they often put out fake announcements on local radio that it's been cancelled. The insurance and policing costs associated with that many visitors are massive compared to the income of the societies so the fewer visitors the better really.

Last time it was on a saturday Southern Counties Radio had several announcements throughout the day that it was cancelled. Didn't work too well, there were still too many people in town.
