Well, Cynic, consider this:
They keep local people employed.
And while they are staying here they spend money locally.

It is very good news for Lewes. We want and need people staying in our town, regardless of what many people are saying. Looks like the Sussex Express is against it as they rarely publish positive letters about the Hotel. Lewes MUST adapt for the future.

50 rooms 50 cars? and yes they employ local people, so does Tesco whose cleaning is done almost solely by estonians, latvians romanians etc etc

Fantastic news for Lewes, can the White Hart & The Crown now be condemned?

I think lewes needs a development such as this, as others have said it will bring people, money and jobs to the town and we need that, "Lewesians" need to wake up and come into the real world.. Times change, things move on, Lewes needs to move on and not be stuck in the ponsey phase that it's currently in.
Mickyboy: as for your comment about Tesco cleaners not being local etc, it's not actually Tesco that employ the cleaners, they are from an external contractors and Tesco have no input to whom they employ. So before you spout your mouth off learn the facts.

Regardless of where the cleaners come from, if they live locally then they contribute to the local economy. I think Mickyboy needs some lessons in basic macroeconomics

Thumbs down for my previous post, really. The White Hart & The Crown are a hideous stain on Lewes, read the reviews, visit them for yourselves then give a thumbs down if I'm wrong.
Both establishments should be the pride of our town, great locations & fantastic properties, the fact they are in the state they are takes some fathoming

@Reality Why would you want to condemn two lovely buildings that just need refurbishment in one post and then say they are "fantastic properties" in another???

Fred, In the days before the Forum, and before I had a computer, I wrote many short and to the point letters to the Sussex Express using my real name.
Most were published; and many people who knew me around East Sussex complimented me on my comments. I don't wish to blow my own trumpet- but the fact remains that the SE used to favour really long and laborious letters sent in by obvious supporters of the local Liberal party.
Now that they have lost their figurehead- whose face used to appear on every page (where's Wally?)- and are no longer based in Lewes, they are as much of a lost cause as the campaign to run trains to Uckfield.
