Just in the process of taking up Trout fishing with flies. Anyone here partake ? I have no ideas about tackle, venues or anything about fly/trout fishing although i've tied flies for many years.
Need to know the best places to begin. I have access to a small section of the river Uck from my coarse fishing club and i know there's some trout in there but really am lost after that. Are there any local clubs around or is it all day ticket around here.
Many thanks.

It's all stocked pond/e fishing around here. The best stuff is private. Try Googling Chalk Springs for a commercial trout fishery. If you want proper trout/salmon fishing that does not cost a kings ransom Wales or Scotland is your best bet. Sad really.

If your section of the river Uck is downstream of Uckfield sewage works I'd be a bit cautious there.

I've not come across anyone who ties flies but does not fish before. Why did you tie flies? Did you tie them to hooks?

Always been fascinated by fly tying as an art form from when i was a kid. I tied the flies for other people to use and yes, always to hooks.
Is anyone a member of Ouse angling preservation society ?

Yes, I am. I know of trout in one of two of the streams but the undergrowth prevents fly fishing. Otherwise there's the sea trout runs in July/August and December/January but I don't know of anyone who has ever caught one on the fly. Even to catch one on a spinner requires weeks of dedication.

I'm a fly fisher and member of OAPS and I tie too. Please be very careful with the trout in the Uck as they are allmost certainly sea trout Parr and it is illegal to kill them, and it is quite difficult to distinguish between them and Brown trout.
That said, I know of 2 people in the last 40 years who have caught a sea trout on a fly in the ouse, but as OAPS angler says the bankside vegetation is very difficult to operate with. Most anglers who fish for sea trout use a spinner and even then they are very difficult to contact. as for stillwater trout fly fishing, there are at least four reservoirs that offer trout fishing within easy reach of Lewes, Weir wood, Arlington, Bewl, and my favourite is Powdermill near Battle. You can also go to the smaller fisheries, Lakedown is good but pricey, chalk springs is a bit too small for my liking and very pricey, and Brick farm at Herstmoceux is a bit like shooting pigs in a barrel but it is open all year and would be a good place to start and not too pricey.
The sea trout run in December/January is the Spawning run and they are out of season and it is very illegal to catch them, If you do hook one, you must return it without removing it from the water. good luck and tight lines.
