Does anyone have any helpful hints on negotiating southern's bewildering pricing? I'll need to travel to London two days a week for a few months (at peak hours sadly). Is there a clever ticket option? The best I've found so far is the 'peak daysave' at £38 for a day return. Thx

Cheapest way seems to be a split ticket ruse. Buy a return from Lewes to Aldershot but ask for the not via London price. This is valid via Clapham junction, but no further into London. Also buy a Clapham junction to Victoria return. I have checked with ticket inspectors and conductors and it is ok to do this and it is much cheaper. It does not work if you want to go to London Bridge as this is not a route via Clapham Junction, but you can use an East Croydon to London Bridge return instead as the second ticket which still saves money. If you have lots of Tube journeys to do you could save even more on the first version by buying just the Lewes to Aldershot return and using an Oyster card ( as these have a daily cap on the maximum you can be charged) from Clapham to Victoria and for the tube journeys , but you would have to get off at Clapham Junction and swipe the Oyster card in at the ticket barriers ( the staff will do this for you) then go back up to an overground platform to get on another train to Victoria!

The website below has useful tips, similar to Skeptical Green's good ones. The absence of Oyster card readers on individual CJ platforms is a pain, though. Good luck with your journeys.

Southern have dropped their '5 tickets for £100' Daysave a couple of years ago which was great for part time commuters. The next best option is the weekly Daysave at £93 for unlimited peak time travel across the southern network, any route. I use mine 3 days a week into London and at least once or twice elsewhere. I'm not sure the Aldershot ruse will be cheaper than the peak daily daysave.
We have to hope that our rail loving MP canvasses Southern to introduce a three-day season ticket - which are being trialled soon on other networks

Anytime return to Aldershot or Ash Vale PLUS Anytime return to London Terminals from Clapham Junction. Saves £10 or £15 a time. Works on any train that stops at Clapham Junction.

brilliant, thanks all. What a shame about the 5 for £100!
