Multi Drop Vans and next day delivery people, i.e. FedEx, dhl, hermes, ups, parcelforce, to name but five, should be loaded with more road taxes, to compensate for the damage and inconvenience caused. As for the pantechicans that deliver ready meals to the restaurants even more so.

I absolutely concur with Border control's observations. The restaurant deliveries of ersatz pre packaged food I find particularly galling. God knows what the providence of the food is? This trend takes money and jobs away from the town. I eat only in independent places.

Maybe something constructive like a main A road that doesn't go through the town, or maybe a second bridge over the river at the Offham end, or maybe continue the dual carriageway past Southerham roundabout so that there isn't 2 miles of queuing traffic ever morning and evening...
It would also be nice if they combined the new housing with a new small village and a new main road or 2, that way the new hoousing will help the situation rather than adding to it, it's really not rocket science.

I spotted the queuing traffic on my way home yesterday, which I must say is most unusual as I leave work at the same time each day, but as I was on foot I was not delayed at all. Looks like all moaning on here emanates from those sitting in a vehicle. I hope those involved in the unfortunate crash (unplanned it has to be added) are ok. How can there be traffic management or contingency for a serious crash? If it was on a motorway, guess what? there would be delays too.

The traffic is there every morning and evening (and most of the day) crash or not. Do you enjoy breathing the fumes in as you’re walking or wouldn’t you rather the traffic went around the town not through it?

About 15 years ago I lived in Bradford Road and used to drive to Brighton for work and getting back into Lewes the prison end was always pretty painful with queues back to the roundabout most nights and the only reasonable option being driving down through Winterbourne and back up the hollow.
I've just started a new job in Shoreham and live in Malling these days and rather than sit on the bypass for hours each evening, I drive through town as so far, apart from the other night, it's been completely clear all the way through town with only the odd bus and traffic light jumping cyclist to slow you down.
I suspect the issue is that a lot of the commuters who used to go West from Lewes every day are now living in Newhaven, Eastbourne, Hailsham etc which has made the bypass unusable as they all try to cram down the single lane after Southerham but left the other way into town gloriously clear. Honestly, at half five I've had one day of delays in ten so far and that was only fifteen minutes or so. The "constant gridlock" simply doesn't exist.

you are not immune to fumes sitting in your car, in fact the air is less dilute than when walking or cycling. Crash related congestion is not the same as general peak traffic, but on occasion it coincides when impact is probably worst case scenario. Roads do carry traffic all day, that's what they are meant to do...choose when and how you travel. Just because traffic is slow moving it doesn't mean 'gridlock', it is just a busy time of day
On 22 Jun 2018 at 1:20pm @lalala wrote:
When it comes to traffic the main difference is, a car at 0 mph is doing 0 mpg, a car moving is doing more. So why wouldn't you want to keep them moving at all times?
Pollution wasn't the point anyway, the point was some new road planning and directing the traffic outside of town (which just ties in with pollution as it moves it out of town).
And slow moving traffic does mean gridlock, it might not cause gridlock where the slow moving traffic is, but 2 miles up or down the road it will.
The main culprit for the traffic at that end of town is not people moving out of town as Miss daisy thinks, it's the genius of merging two lanes into 1 at the exact point where the A26 the A27 meet on the Southerham roundabout (a bottleneck on a bottleneck).
On 22 Jun 2018 at 1:58pm @@lalal wrote:
You're right about the Southerham bottleneck x2 - What is needed is a set of traffic lights there, controlling the traffic from Lewes . The whole of the "By Pass" should be considered as a section of Railway ie. Lights at both ends controlling the number of vehicles let onto the road. I am being serious - Let it all build up from Brighton to the Prison roundabout but let it turn Left for Lewes Town.

Problem is made worse by people who make short journeys in cars when they could use public transport or walk. Too many people have cars these days. There's no need to drive to Brighton and back, or to anywhere else served by decent public transport. Only issue is the cost, but sitting in your car in traffic probably isn't cost effective either.
