Just received the 2nd edition through the door. The item about calling Lewes District Council, pages 25/26, hits a note and would be amusing, if not but its is true. Not an air brushed version of Lewes as in the other local competitor. Why should we accept this level of service from our council ? We pay one of the highest council taxes in the land and rising. Hope the nationals pick it up to shame them further.

Bert, there was a vote, democracy happened and those people on the council won. Terrible public services for increased council tax rates was the will of the people and to suggest otherwise is undemocratic. You lost, get over it.

I think it is a reasonable expectation to be able to contact our, unelected, council officers by telephone, whichever way we voted.

10 years of cuts and our council is down to providing only what it is legally required to. This is what a 40% reduction in central funding does.

TBH in this position I prefer they divert money from manning general enquiry phones etc to things like social care.

How do you suggest we access that social care if we can't ring the people in Eastbourne ?

Personally I think it's a terrible reflection on our society, that we have to rely on a council to care and support us to such a large degree, when in reality they can't be relied on to take our rubbish away.

If people vote for a political party that pledges to reduce government spending what else do you expect? Blame the voters or blame democracy.

@Bert I've lived in the area for 25 years, and only once in that time did the binmen fail to empty my dustbin, and then it was a new man who was too rigid aout the rules (putting bin near kerb). Why are you exaggerating?

Bored2, none of the savings (if indeed there are any) will ever go to social care, because that is an ESCC function, but I'll spare you my oft-repeated rant on the idiotic wastefulness of 3-tier local government.
Really, the responsibility for high council tax and poor services is central government, who've cut the amount of money they give to local councils by 40% over the past few years. Cutting services and raising council tax is the only way of getting close to closing that gap.
And Ed and Nevillman are spot on - it's what people voted for. Fools.
