Hi. This is perhaps an odd request, but here it goes:
I am an artist and researcher, who tends to make sound and videos around a particular theme. I am working on a project exploring the reasons why people vote for the Conservative party. To be completely clear, my goal is not in any way to antagonize those who vote differently than I do, but to initiate a conversation by which people from potentially opposing viewpoints might come to understand one another, and potentially even find some common ground. I am looking to make some short filmed discussions between myself (typically of a Green/Labour persuasion), and Conservative voters, with each side given the opportunity to clearly and critically explore their views without bias or judgment.
If that sounds like something you might enjoy, please reply below for more info.
Thanks!

Perhaps its partially down to people fearing "change", and that its "better the devil you know" attitude and wanting to retain the status quo. Labour and other centre/left parties are often portrayed as reckless with finances, want to tax everyone to the hilt and nationalise every industry. Propaganda has worked well for generations on making people believe socialism is evil and bad, and that we would end up turning into Venezuela if we voted in Labour. Its the same right-wing talking points, drummed into people year after year and its deep rooted, that it enables/excuses them to vote in tory governments (who many, don't even like but prefer it over radical "communism").

All of their arguments and fears, are of course easily debunked, or massively exaggerated. Do you recall how the tories since 2010 have been using the old "Labour left a note saying theres no money left"? Election after election, its trotted out as damning Labours fiscal irresponsibility.....may I remind people that Labour left office with the country in just under £1tn of national debt. 11 years later, we're up to £2.3tn - even before the pandemic, the tories had doubled the national debt.

Basically, in simplified terms, propaganda nonsense has made people believe Tories = Churchill and Labour = Stalin. Daft really, especially given that Stalin did more to save Britain than Churchill in WW2!

Politics is all about feelings. Conservatives maybe venal and corrupt but they know how to play the game which is about power.
Blair understood this. No Labour leader since has.

I'm not sure what kind if you don't know that the plural of Tory is Tories, not Tory's. Who do we bame for this failure to understand the language?

Oddly enough I saw a quote from CSLewis on the same subject just the other day. He basically said that whereas self interested rulers have venal, or otherwise, distractions- those ruling for your own good are at it 24/7. I think it's true in most cases, people vote Tory for fear of finding something Nurse. To mangle another quotation.
On the topic of national debt- Both Labour and Conservative are being a tad duplicitous in this respect. They are playing on the public's ignorance that if there was no debt there would be no money. Surprising but true, as a little nosing about on the internet would prove.

'I am working on a project exploring the reasons why people vote for the Conservative party.' - More interesting would be exploring the reasond why people vote at all. Do you really imagine there is any actual difference in voting for a Tory capitalist party, a Labour capitalist party or a Lib Dem capitalist party. Yes, I know there are also Greens, but as we see in Germany the closer they get to power the more they support capitalism.

The green party is a corporation, MPs are corporations, the Government is a corporation. They are all dependent on the banking corporations in order to operate, so how can the greens be any different? This public-private game needs looking at. Mussolini defined Fascism as the amalgamation of government and corporations. Well, well, what's happening? Oh but it couldn't happen here.....could it? Locking down the healthy in contravention to all human rights laws? Forcing people to wear masks when the evidence for their usefulness is proved questionable in scientific studies around the world? What would Paine have said about this tyranny. The worship of this local hero looks a bit hollow to me as everything he stood for is slowly destroyed in the name of staying safe. Is that what he did? Stayed safe? Pull the other one.
