Finally, some sense from Lewes District Council! All this talk of the Thebes possibly becoming a centre for arts and crafts is fantastic. It would be a brilliant home for the creative artists in Lewes and we’ve got to get the council to do this!

I'm all for it being let out to artists and "creatives", so long as the rental charges for the space are not subsidised to any higher level than any other private individual or company operating out of a council building.
Artists are not "owed a living" by society - if their work is genuinely of sufficient interest or suitably attractive to customers, and sensibly priced, then it will be bought, and the artist/creator will make a living from their efforts and creative skills.
If however, their work is not attractive to customers, then why should their ongoing activities be subsidised by local taxpayers?
Hard but true, I have no time for the argument that "creativity" is beyond financial considerations - nope, sorry it isn't.
If anyone's output is worth buying, then they will find it sells, and they may make a living out of it, if their output is not worth buying (at the price they ask), then they won't sell it - simple. They can then either drop the price until it becomes attractive to potential customers, or they can change what they are doing to make their offerings more attractive to potential customers.
I have no issue with people being willing patrons of struggling artists/'creatives', but that has to be a personal decision, I do not want my hard earned share of council tax, or central tax, being spent on anything other than essential services.
PS don't bother with the thumbs down, I already know my views will upset all the 'creatives' and 'luvvies' in Lewes who think their 'arts' are vitally important to the betterment of mankind. That's fine by me.
