Hello everyone - I've been looking everywhere for advice on how to deal with the firm who are sending out parking charges, but I'm not getting a clear answer. I understand that many, many people every day get charge letters - what's the accepted view in Lewes? Pay up or don't even think about paying? I saw no signs, or I'd not have parked there. Any help or advice gratefully received... and many thanks in advance!

If it's the bays outside Laura Ashley then it's simple. While the penalties might be extortionate avoiding them is made very simple by the numerous signs which explain the consequences.

So you think there just happened to be some free parking right in the middle of town.... Surely by now most drivers are more savvy & look out for these scams.
I'd like to see any of our councils doing something about it though as its a blight on the town designed to cause misery.
My advice, don't pay it, make them go to court to get the money out of you.... They'll never bother as it costs too much

In what sense is that space a car park? There is no way that anyone can pay to park there. Just because there are painted bays doesn't mean that parking is permitted by the landowner.

I've worked in a court that deals with these fines. The very worst that can happen is that you're made to pay the fine plus a token additional charge. If you turn up and state your case, the magistrates will be on your side. But the company will probably decide that it's not worth the expense of paying a solicitor to represent them and back out. Either way, the worst case scenario isn't terrible.

Silly name but a serious answer to Frank -- I'm not sure of the exact place you're referring to but a few months ago I parked where I think you mean and clearly saw a typical " we'll rip you off " parking sign on a wall - I presume I was on CCTV looking @ the sign , getting into my car and moving off - I then went and parked behind Waitrose where I bought a bottle of soft drink, keeping the receipt, and wandered round The Cliffe for half an hour. On my return I was prepared to argue the toss with Waitrose re. parking there
Nothing happened. Why doesn't the charity shop put a Polite Notice in it's window so that others can do as I did ? P.S just looked on a map - I drove into Eastgate Wharf- parked on the right hand side and saw signs.

If you're familiar with terms such as:
"wet ink signature", "implied rights of access", "Warrant of control", "warrant of entry", "was the judge under his oath" then it's probably worth fighting, If you have no clue about common law I would suggest take photo of the signs and sign positions (are they big enough, are they at the right height etc) and send your case to the court. The courts they use you CANNOT attend, they are not real courts they do things by mail only. Good luck, but if you know nothing about this stuff pay the fine, DVLA will give the firm your contact details, they will turn up and clamp your car (or worse force entry to your house and start taking stuff).
The fine is only going to get bigger (and each time they visit the bill will go up a lot)... If you do want a fight, I suggest you start looking this stuff up, remove implied rights of access to the bailiff company and also get CCTV at your house (so you can record when they do and don't turn up - if they come with a "van" they can charge more for the visit so you need to start recording this stuff). PS, also get very friendly with the local police as they will be needed, and you'll need to know enough about this stuff to talk to the police and explain why a warrant isn't valid.
Suggest you pay the bill, it's a lot easier in the long run.

@h, yes I think wtf is clearly pretty stupid...
If the signs are legal (the right size and the right height) you are entering a legally binding contract by parking there, DVLA will give the company your details, the company can take you to court, and will win, you then pay an inflated amount or the court appointed bailiff can then seize assets, Police will assist them to enforce this. Yes I agree they are *probably* chancing it, but it's one thing to take the risk yourself, it's another thing entirely to give that out as general advice... Wtf are you going to pay the bill if your advice turns out to be duff?
I would liken it to "I ran across the road with my eyes shut, didn't get run over so therefore it's fine for you to do it too"...

I got a ticket for parking in the permit only bays without a permit. I found the signs confusing as neither of the P signs refers to permits AND the Brc (?) (permit) bays. One refers to the permit only bays but doesn't say where it's referring to and the other only refers to the pay and display bays. The writing on the ground also only refers to pay and display parking. I accepted the risk of the higher charge and appealed via the popla site which is extremely user friendly and won the appeal on the basis that ops hadn't provided evidence that I had no permit. The signage IS confusing in my opinion and there is no grace period either which I believe is contrary to the bpa regs.

My husband parked on the end bay outside Laura Ashley and bought a ticket. We received a £100 PCN charge? Wrote to appeal and sent photos of our ticket with receipt from a post Office of the displayed ticket and didn't hear anything until today a letter arrived from debt collection wanting £170! No letter received from Parking Solutions turning down our appeal in fact we were getting annoyed that they hadn't replied and we asked for our photos to be returned (they were not). The debt collectors were very nice and said on their computer we had been sent a letter turning down our appeal but we have proof they we sent a letter to them and where is their proof their letter was delivered to us and signed for. if this first appeal was turned down we could go to appeal again but if this again was turned down we would have to pay the £100. I cannot understand why something is not done about this firm. We often visit Lewes and have done for many years and don't expect to be mugged. My husband has a Blue Badge but prefers to park and pay rather than on double yellow lines where necessary but now will park on double yellow lines in future. We are taking this further and suggest that this firm cannot continue to harass people in this way.
