How can even the final inspection by Visit Britain warrant 3 stars? Did the inspector have his eyes closed.
I grew up in Lewes but now live nearby. I often come back for my Lewes fix as I still consider Lewes my home town and remain very proud of it
However - despite the so called makeover - this programmes was not good for the town's profile. The owner still needs to smarten up her act (BIG time)and do Lewes proud. Other estblishments are a real credit to the County town and sadly the Crown Hotel isnt one of them.

Sorry to inform you GH but im not sally. I did feel quite sorry for her tonight, the poor cow was getting all the blame put on her. She cant be held responsible for the condition of the hotel, thats the owners fault and problem. I did find the bottle's of beer stashed in the laundry room quite funny. And who makes the beds or should i say who cant make a bed, they were disgusting, if you cant make a bed then get fitted sheets would be the answer. And the 4 poster bed just killed me, if anyone even tried to have a bunk up in that it would have collapsed on top of them LMAO. It was very entertaining :-)

Think it was very unfair of Karen the supposed to be manager blaming the housekeeper Sally. Clearly Sally is trying her best but has no management or direction from Karen. Clearly the hotel has its issues - but we all have to remember that at the end of the day they are trying to make good viewing! Alot of it would have been staged and edited for maximum impact. Surely there had to be something in it for the landlady - otherwise you wouldnt 'expose' yourself is such a huge way? Was the work paid for by Channel 5?

Absolutely speechless that it got a star back. My hair stood up when the Inspector described the rooms as lovely after the deep clean. Just shows you that Britain has no standards. Who on earth will pay 70 a night for such a post make-over dump? It's a slap in the face for people like Millers B&B whom work hard, charge less and offer authentic cozy rooms and outstanding service. Imagine what the White Hart is like if the Crown is already a tip. I would like to use one of these Bacteria machines on their buffet, bar and pool. I'm surprised no one I know hasn't come down with anything yet.

Also I went to a Dinner Dance at Shelley's last December - meal was total crap, service appallling and bar prices through the roof! We might do better to turn them ALL into Premier Inns - at least they're clean and quite good value for money. Even the smoking ban can be bypassed in a lot of them - good times!

think what a lot of people are forgetting is that it is a TV programme. They try to make a place look as bad as possible for as much of the programme as possible before magic TV lady finally sorts it out - all that stuff about the crown being the worst place ever, or where she might finally fail is all put on and probably repeated at most places she goes. It was grubby, both the owner and housekeeper were fairly poor at their jobs, but when it was 'deep cleaned' and the roles were sorted out it looked ok. It looks like the sort of place that need a bit of cash spent on it to make it a lovely place to stay, but often that cash isn't there, so 2nd best is to be clean comfortable and tidy which looks like the direction it is going in.

If the owner doesn't give a toss (she clearly didn't have any shame at all) then why would the cleaner? In my humble opinion you need more than a little senior citizen running around with a duster in a hotel and bar that size. Not that I've ever been through the door - nor ever will now.
As for it being underfunded, probably, but you need to be at least clean enough for guests to stay there to make any money ...another missed Lewesian opportunity going to rack and ruin, chalk it up next to the White Hart.

On Demand Five now. Have to say that we have some good memories of times there but several of our friends stayed there just after she took over, including one who runs a highly successful B&B and who offered her a lot of advice which she ignored even back then and they all reckoned Karen hadn't a clue. Given how many good B&B's there are in Lewes the reviews will have to stay good for some time before she can be guaranteed our custom. What I want to know is, how did the poor sods she 'cared' for prior to her reincarnation as hotelier feel about her standard of cleanliness?
