One of the best locations for a pub in the District if not the County. An idiot could make a decent living off of that place, like shooting fish in a barrel

The first and last time we went there a few months ago, the owner drove out after us, tried to overtake on the country lane approach, then did so at the t-junction forcing us off the road into the verge and nearly colliding with an oncoming car. Needless to say he didn't stop and sped off. Absolute cod piece.

Hope you reported him, personally I would have found him back at the pub at a later date and had words face to face, when I say words I mean it loosely...

We went down a couple of weeks ago to see why this place elicits so much forum vitriol. It looks a bit tired and cobbled together, but there's no disputing it's in a splendid location. The queues were ridiculously long and full of very angry people. The staff were mainly kids and the manager is frightened and useless in the face of so many complaining customers.
The boats on the river are full of rubbish and dirty water and barely look water tight. The plates of food coming out were thrown together, under cooked frozen fare at gastro pub prices.
I'm old enough too remember eccentric pub landlords with fondness, but the silly strutting half wit owner is just an ignorant and ill mannered joke. I don't suppose the anchor gets much in the way of repeat custom or local trade, which is a real shame.

I've eaten at the Anchor twice this summer, both times as part of a large group and found the food delicious and the service great. It was busy so we cleared our own table when we found an empty table, the staff were really grateful for the help and showed their appreciation through their service. Also found the boating service very helpful and considerate of two young nervous passengers, they let us go in a boat before we committed to spending any money incase the children changed their minds. Personally I would recommend the pub and the boats!

Who were the group members?

You do not have to visit a premises to leave a negative feed back on a Tripadvisor, ask the locals who kept leaving negative comments about the Crown Hotel long after it stopped short lets on the rooms. And thats a fact

You don't have to visit the premises to leave a positive feedback on the Lewes Forum either.
The Anchor Inn has been subject of many threads attesting to it's poor service, terrible attitude and bullying landlord. The only counter arguments only ever come from single visit commentators.
'G of Lewes', typically, appears to have never been on the forum before. Looks suspiciously like a sock puppet.
It would be nice if he or she could elaborate on who this large group is, no doubt it will be 'a group of friends from out of the district', or 'a group I met at a conference in Brighton' - it certainly won't be the staff of Waitrose, or any other group another visitor to the forum might conceivably know and could cross-check with.
And that's a fact.
