Here's a suggestion:
With potholes once again rearing their ugly heads, would it not be an idea to put speed bumps into the potholes and then we should have a reasonably smooth road surface?

potholes are negative speedbump, and just a bit more punitive when wet!
Just slow down in town, or walk yourself there. We don't need perfect roads, we can just slow down a bit.

The pavements are far worse that the roads! They're a deathtrap at night, which is why everyone walks in the road round me.

I think the roads throughout the county are dreadful. You can tell when you cross the county boundary in places because the road surface suddenly improves.
Agree about the pavements, too. Some of the tracks on the downs are less treacherous than many of the pavements. The pavement in St Andrews Lane is an obstacle course of trip hazards and the path along Winterbourne Hollow is appalling, especially in the evening, because it's so badly lit.

ACT is right. East Sussex has notoriously bad roads. Maybe too many councils and inefficient councillors to actually do something about it.

The pavement along Fisher Street from the Town Hall to the old police station is the worse in Lewes on both sides!

As a keen cyclist, I can completely agree with this. I recently did an 80 mile ride all over the High Weald. The Sussex side was full of bad roads, potholes, treacherous; the Kent side as smooth as a baby's behind.

I find the opposite true - as soon as I cross into Kent the roads get worse. Tunbridge Wells' roads are rubbish
