In yesterdays Sussex Express, assurances were made by Councillor James Page that St.Marys have a lease until the year 2022. Oh well no worries then........... Conveniently he forgot to mention that there is a 6 month get-out clause if Lewes District Council wish to develop the site.

That sounds very unlike our Strong Leader.

There's a piece of paper doing the rounds at the moment that shows they plan to redevelop within 12-24 months.
From what I've seen, councils who want to sell off social assets will do so, no matter how much the locals protest. If the users of St Mary's want to keep it their best bet is to find a way to raise the money and buy it off the council. That way it really WILL be *their* centre.

But if the council own it, it's already *their* centre. Sadly, our brutally useless local councillors are entirely too convinced of their ability to know better than the people they purport to represent.

But it's not though, it's the council's centre. If they think that houses are a better idea than a social centre, that's what they'll have there.

Except that they don't represent us, do they, which is probably why they couldn't give a stuff about what the people of Lewes actually want. It's not as if we voted for any of them.

So we have just glossed over the answer , why don't all the regular hall users and supporters get behind the club and mak an offer , if there is 24 months then let's get going , it's a big ask , maybe the council would take staged payments ? So who's up for it ? And who should we contact at the club ?

This is very simple. Will one of the Councillors who regularly post on this site simply ask the Chief Executive if the lease can be cancelled with 6 months notice, and if the Council have discussed redeveloping the site within 12-24 months. And then we can move on when we get those responses rather than listen to each side claiming that the other one is just making it up. The facility is publicly owned, it is clearly used, and needed, so redeveloping it would be perverse, unless a development included an equivalent facility. Maybe that is what is planned?
What i do know is that LDC have only got themselves to blame if there is undue paranoia, because we have all seen the crappy developments they have enthusiastically endorsed, including leaving us with an unwanted derelict HQ Gallery, instead of the open space and Community facility that already existed, and was wanted.
