Quote from Ruth O'Keeffe:
"Yesterday the debate at Lewes District Council on the motions about St Mary's Social Centre ended with the following passed by a majority after debate and amendment:
"This council recognises the important role played by the St Mary's Social Centre in Lewes, and the immense public support for it. In view of this, the Council requests that the Cabinet either (a) agree to the removal of the St Mary's Social Centre from the list of potential development sites within Lewes District, or if that is not possible, then (b) make it a requirement of any contract with any development partner that St Mary's Social Centre is retained in its existing or an improved form and enabled to function without interruption to the activities of either St Mary's Social Centre or the St Mary's Supporters Club"
I would personally have preferred a straight request to cabinet to remove the centre from the development list altogether, but this was defeated; 17 were for straight removal (myself, most of Lib Dem group and the UKIP members), 19 against (most of Conservative group), 2 abstentions (one from Lib Dem one Conservative)."

Some suggestions for things you and your five year old can do in and around Lewes.
- Go to Monkey Business
- paint some pottery at Fireworks on Weston Road
- go and visit Lewes Castle
- Go to the football (Kids go free)
- Go swimming at the Pells or leisure centre
- Cycle to Glynde and back
- Have a walk on the Railway Land
- Check out the Lewes Priory ruins
- Go and see a film at Lewes Cinema
- go to one of the parks (go skateboarding if you want at the skateboard park - maybe not with your five year old, but he/she might appreciate it when they are a little older)
Then you can use the great transport links to Brighton or Eastbourne and take advantage of everything they have to offer including bowling and a permanent cinema and rejoice in the fact that at the end of the day you will come back to a lovely looking town with (mostly) nice people.
Have a great time!
xx
