I have it on good authority that JD Wetherspoon has carried out a feasibility study into at least one site in Lewes. Unfortunately, the person who knows the details was unwilling to divulge the location(s).

Now, I like a good pub but I really can't be doing with these places - basically they're just barns for getting hammered in. I think at least two and maybe three existing pubs would end up closing if a 'spoons opened: the Royal Oak, the Lamb and the Black Horse could all be at risk. Their massive buying power enables them to undercut 'normal' pubs on eg cheap lager.

What Wetherspoons tend to do is look for large spaces which can be converted at minimal cost. They took over a lot of old Woolies sites but of couse ours is now Intersport. They rarely take on current licensed premises unless it's a particularly prime site and I'm sure they wouldn't touch the magistrates court because the conversion cost wouldn't suit their business model.

So what could they be looking at? The old solicitor's building on Cliffe Precinct maybe?

I thought that Wetherspoons have hundreds of converted 'landmark' buildings such as old cinemas, etc. They even wanted to turn the De La Warr pavilion into a boozer a few years back. So the Court would be right up their street, surely?
