I have heard Southover have a few firesite issues this year. Does anyone know where they will have there fireworks?

Watch that space for confirmation.
Various firesite options have been considered/discussed, all of them being south of the Brighton - Eastbourne railway line (I believe).
SBS will announce/confirm their firesite shortly - I believe their new firesite plans are not yet common knowledge even among their membership as nothing was finalised at time of their last AGM.

Is it just a case of Southover picking a plot of land, or does it also have to be approved by other agencies; police/fire etc?

Serious question: why are other a handful of people in a couple of societies so down on Southover? It can't be because they have members who aren't Lewes born-and-bred as every society (even Cliffe) has them. It's not red and black that piles in off the buses and trains into Lewes on the 5th either...

Probably due to the fact that they're the only ones who can afford to buy property in Lewes now.

divisively slagging off any one society helps those who'd like to ban bonfire altogether, long may they fail

Humbert, there are members of any society that are down on any other society. Most reasons are probably lost in history or as simple as they don't agree with the way the other society is doing something because "that's not how we do it, so it can't be right". I think it is just Southover are getting the moans at the moment (mostly over a fire site, which is fairly topical and important at this time of year), but wait a while and I'm sure it will be the turn of Cliffe/Commercial/Borough/Waterloo/South Street/Nevill (with 2 ls and no E!) very soon.

In answer to curious landowner, it involves liasing with fire and authorities, but generally it's access related and checking that you have your assembly points covered, are you next to anything flammable , that kind of thing. If you are offering get in contact with them.

I see (and know) many Cliffe members who originate from London and I travel with them on a daily basis to the big smoke, so the DFL label should be applied evenly across the societies

Southover don't tow the party line , and are a little bit dismissive of the bonfire council , there just isn't room for them to do their own thing , we all get on at a " management " level but they don't want to play ball . That's where the friction arises and on the night it cause other society's problems , there you have it ,

Not sure what the society's CIC's health has to do with a fire site if they had problems it would be announced in the programme which is already out out! As for out sides Southover BS has more Lewes and Lewes District people organising it than the so called oldest societies who are run by total outsiders from Eastbourne/Haywards Heath/Newhaven and yes London! That's why Southover is successful its run by those with experience!

the day - I used to follow bonfire way back in my wasted youth ( 70`s) By golly it was fun then - round the county , all good natured piss ups in the villages . One I particularly re member was @ Fletching. Someone had made a phallus out of dental plastic - damned thing looked so real - cracked the whole place up . Another time @ the Town Hall some AGM or other - a geezer wanders out of the gents singing " You`ll never walk again ". Even the guys running the show and trying to debate serious buisiness had to laugh . Now , via the forum it seems politics and DFL`s are what it`s about . Maybe the Bonfire Movement takes itself too seriously - or maybe it`s just the creeping bureauracracy (sic) that`s strangling many things in the 21st. Century.

Back to the original question.... Southover are not having a display this year due to fire site problems.
Their tweet "We're very sorry to announce we will not be showing off our extraordinary prowess with fireworks this year. There will be no public event "
