What a fantastic idea, why not make it a road bridge?
And join it onto a ring road.

Its simple, you extend Ham lane under the railway line across the boggy bit to the bridge at one end and extend it to the Kingston road at the other.
Of course you would need to widen it quite a bit to two lanes both sides to accmmodate the heavy goods vehicles and pensioner traffic. There would also be a roundabout to feed from the A27 behind Priory School just next to the phone masts. The pavements in South Street would need to be narrowed to handle the traffic too or you could put in a flyover to cross Cliffe.

Radical, I know but it just might work.

I don't think it would work,I rember the old days when south street was used before the Tunnel was built.
Chaos to put it mildly.

Handy for the frogs to get away from hoards of tourists visiting the reed bed.
That's it, we need a bridge on environmental grounds
