Just heard Band Aids ubiquitous Christmas song on the wireless.
Must be getting old or was life just a little bit more meaningful
once upon a time? Went to a carol service last night, perhaps
the spirit entered me, sounds a bit wrong that but you know
what I mean. Or perhaps it was the mulled wine afterwards.....

And, can highly recommend Southover Church. Next Sunday 18th, traditional carol service 4pm. Contemporary 7pm. You will need to get there early for a seat.

Wasn't terribly soppy at all: a packed house at St John sub Castro heard a terrific performance of Handel's Messiah on Saturday night -- all the Christmas spirit! (oh, and Passion, and Easter, and Ascension...) The performers were the local East Sussex Bach Choir, and they hired probably the best Baroque soloists and orchestra in the world, half of whose members happen to live near Lewes. This was a clean, integrated, world-standard, historically-informed performance which well-reflected the breadth of imagination and lively emotion in Handel's score, and stayed true to Baroque performance practice in both singing and playing.
But, if you missed it, there's a free candle-lit carol concert in the church on Saturday at 6pm, by the Esterhazy Chamber Choir, another local ensemble.

Oooh thank you Castle Gate! I was one of those performers on Saturday so it's lovely to hear you enjoyed it. I know we all relished taking part and we did think it had gone well, but it's great to hear an objective opinion!
On a related note, did you know that the music education services in Brighton are being entirely cut, and that they're under threat in East Sussex too? That's the next generation of performers who might miss out on one of the great joys of life. There's a petition online for Brighton in the link.

Love the open invitation! It's great to see a space where people can freely share their thoughts. Looking forward to hearing... more
