If they can charge £2.60 a pint in a southern home county pub like Chelmsford, why the hell do I pay double in Lewes?

It's the free market law of supply and demand.
If people are unhappy paying the asking price, then they will stop using the most expensive pubs, and beer prices will fall or pubs will close down, simple really.

No doubt publicans/landlords will blame local business rates, rents, running costs, alcohol duty etc, but if you don't like the prices go elsewhere - or drink at home (cheapest option of the lot, apart of course from abstaining completely!).

Of course, if consumers vote with their feet, then pubs may reduce costs to allow them to reduce prices/maintain profits, so expect a loss of 'atmosphere', and a loss of the comfortable surroundings that many decent pubs in Lewes offer.

Comfortable surroundings ??? The pubs are stripped right back already, if they added sawdust that would absorb some sounds and smells (mostly toilets). Gone are carpets & curtains too. Sometimes it's like bedlam with everyone shouting at each other just to be heard. It's the fashion ! ITS JUST CHEAP ,

I go about once a month to a pub now because I can drink decent beer from a supermarket taken home at a fifth the price. A fifth.

The best pub in Lewes will be the one that introduces a happy hour in the morning for pensioners. So they can afford to get out and be sociable.
