Ringmer

Family friends (a very nice modest young couple with small children) are hoping to move to Ringmer due to his job & will be looking for a council or housing association exchange. We know nothing about the village & the familiy's options may be limited but wonder if anyone on here can give a few helpful tips regarding areas to best avoid in Ringmer & why.

Sadly, almost all Ringmer's ordinary Lewes DC council houses were sold during the 1980s - there used to be loads, but now only 150 or so, many of them old people's bungalows. Only a few dozen HA houses there, as not much recent new-build. Just a handful of new LA/HA tenancies each year. According to East Sussex in Figures, 80% of Ringmer housing is owner occupied (floor price for a 3-bed house about £250K), 10% LA/HA rented and 10% privately rented (budget £1K/month for 3-bed). A lot of the latter group are former council houses.
Lewes is equally bad, if not worse. However, there is loads of building going on in Uckfield, only 5-6 miles from Ringmer, and prices and rents are quite a lot cheaper too. Pity the bus service between the two is pretty well non-existent.
Ringmer is a low crime area, a mixed community, and we all get on pretty well. The former council developments are well scattered through the village. The only place I would worry about living is a small section around the stream in Broyle Lane that has been known to flood 20-30 houses nearby. They say it's the culvert and it's been improved, but there is a long record of flooding just at that point.

What on earth were you doing BEHIND the school, Ed? There is no public land there, just acres of playing fields - not a place that grown-ups should be? I shall look out for this in the next Ringmer crime report -first assault we have had for ages, and make a change from the usual thefts of diesel and heating oil. Mind you, we have had a burglary in the past year - not by a local though.

Former council estate, still a few council houses there but not many; nice, well-built, houses, reasonable gardens, close to village shops, close to the Green, easy walk to the schools. Garages, where present, mostly in courts but nearby free public car park and space for on-road parking. Good place to live if you get the chance.

Thanks for help its awkward for anyone moving to new places. We can none of choose our neighbours but with little knowledge of an area it is easy to unwittingly make wrong choices.

Uckfield.. Definitely. Much cheaper housing. Much more friendly town than Lewes.
Better facilities and much better sports and leisure facilities than Lewes that all the family can enjoy. Excellent Cinema and better priced restaurants than Lewes and all without the stress of knowing where to park. Better by a countrymile imo.

I live in Ringmer, having moved from Lewes, and it was the best decision we've ever made. We've moved from a 3 bedroom end of terrace to a 5 bedroom on a country lane. The school is good and all the shops and restaurants give us everything we need. Our social life has gone through the roof too. And the best bit? Loads of Lewesians live here! Just don't tell the DFL's.........
