How will we know if the vaccine is working?
Will the survival rate go up from 99.7% to 99.8%?

It certainly is but a much higher %age will die due to other sections of the NHS being underfunded because of the cost.

There's also plenty of risks other than the immediate risk of death from CoVID as we know it.
Firstly, this is a new disease. A failure to stop it will give it greater opportunity to mutate (as we've seen) and new variants could be vaccine-immune or more deadly or have debilitating effects. Imagine a world where there are 5 or 6 seasonal variants in the general population at any given time which are all vaccine-immune and as deadly as this one and you would be quickly approaching the point where those viruses would cause more deaths in the UK than all other causes combined.
Then, there's the fact that your body's immunity system will likely not work for significant variants, meaning that each person could catch each variant. This would mean that the nation's workforce that isn't killed by this would be requiring sick leave multiple times per year for this virus to an extent that could cripple smaller businesses and would cost our country a fortune in sick pay.
Then, keep in mind that many of those that don't die would survive because of extensive medical care that would put strain on the NHS.
And, the most significant issue here, is that all of these issues would be extremely long-term whereas the current measures are not long-term solutions.
So, really, we would know the vaccine is working when returning to normal is a less disastrous situation than the current one.
Also, for those vaccines that are 90+% effective after second dose, that would increase a survival rate of 99.7% to over 99.97% which, on the scale of national populations, is a LOT of people.

You realise that the vast majority of deaths occur in those over the average age of death, I hope. Statistically then ,Covid must be a good thing- so much for statistics. The latest I hear is that more vaccinated people have died of the delta variant than those who haven't. Colds and flu are always mutating so it's nothing new. I've taken no precautions and not caught anything, don't forget fear and anxiety depress the immune system. Throw away your TV, cancel your newspaper and you'll be fine.
