I heard that pells used to be home to some rather large carp but that those same large carp were netted up and placed into different ponds/lakes. Does anyone know how many pounds they went up to and how long ago they were in there?
-Thanks

First i've heard of it. Carp used to go to over 12lb but there used to be Tench, Bream, Roach, Rudd and the occasional Pike in there. Most of the fish were probably lost during the floods.

If you are walking past it at the moment you'll notice that the water is gin clear and you will see shoals of carp ranging from four to seven pounds still cruising around. They are generally frequenting the area between the island on the corner by the recreation ground and the end by where the "Paper Mill Cut" used to be, (the Willey's Bridge end) but there are a couple of shoals towards the Cabbage Walk end as well. As Towney has said, in my day there also used to be Tench, Rudd and the occasional pike chasing the roach fry , there were also flounders that came up from the river but most importantly, it was filled with weed that provided shelter, cover and spawning areas. It's never been the same since it was drained and dredged to facilitate repairs to the banks and deepen it in the seventies. Shame.

It never used to have Carp in either many years ago (early to mid 70's) The eco system was good and a wide variety of fish and life were common. Along came the Carp and they basically took over. There are however, thousands of baby Roach in the pond at the moment.
Hopefully, when the North Street development starts, the pond will be part of it which gives the opportunity to get it planted up properly and then stocked with a decent amount of species.
