We have booked this pub for a 50th bday celebration. People are now telling us it's not the best of places in Lewes, anyone been?

Possibly because it is not in Lewes.
Lots of drinking and driving opportunities.

Lovely pub, but yes it is in Firle where public transport is non-existent in the evenings. It would be wise to book some taxis.

Don't know when you've booked it for but if it's before 1 March I suggest talking to Alec at the Lamb. You can bring in your own food/caterer (saving tonnes of dosh), there is a huge open fireplace and lots of mingling room and just a general, welcoming atmosphere—plus plenty of public transport. Yes, Alec is a friend but this is a genuine estimate of the situation, having had my husband's 50th there and just attending a friend's. Live music (generally brilliant bands) starts at 9-9.30 so guests can stay on for further entertainment or move on to someplace quieter (Pelham House bar and patio suits for that—VERY quiet most nights...). Just a thought if you wanted to save some money and make sure your guests aren't drink driving.

I attended a party recently at The Lamb of Lewes. It was simply brilliant. Quiet in the early evening with space to talk and scoff the lovely food that birthday boy had brought: and happy customers arrived later with a stomping good band at night. Talk to the Landlord. Good, broad choice of ales and lagers.

The Ram used to be a 10 out of 10 Pub (about 30 yrs ago) then it went all Gastro. The trend place to be at the moment is Aqua - and before you ask, the Manager is not my friend.

The Ram is expensive and can be disorganised. I would pin down all the details with the manager - will you have your own private room, how many staff will be dedicated to your party, price per person, menus etc.
several years ago I booked a small party at the Pekham House Hotel - there were about 25 of us. We booked the three course set menu - at the time about £20 - and they gave us a seperate room and a dedicated waiter. Booze was on top, no charge for the room. Food was good, service was excellent, hotel was very helpful.
If you are worried about the Ram I would just call them and talk about what you want and your expectations.
