Parking

Apparently there is a petition going round about scrapping the parking scheme (if Eastbourne can do it, why can't we?). I know there is a copy in Fillers, and there may be others. It is organised by the Chamber of Commerce so there may be something on their website. It would be great to get rid of this useless scheme.

As there isn't anything on the Lewes Chamber of Commerce 'website', I have put up a Parking petition form
Please add your name to the petition and I'll make sure your voices are heard by emailing the people responsible for this very unpopular scheme

Excellent choice of words in this petition. 'Abolished' - that, or 'blown up' is the only solution. I think the Chamber of Commerce petition is much more feeble and pathetic, requesting only that the colour of uniforms be changed or that one extra parking-space be created, I can't recall the exact details.

We have had the survey conducted by the CofC, Sussex Express and Lewes Town Council, which ESCC have ignored. Norman has had numerous discussion with ESCC. All to little avail. Get the Tory Councillors out of County hall, ie not the 2 Lewes County Councillors (Lib Dem & Independant) but those from the rest of East Sussex who dot give a fig about Lewes and it seems Eastbourne. Tell your friends and relatives outside Lewes not vote Tory for the County elections. This is only way to change things. Cllr. Matthew Lock and his cohorts are making a mockery of this town

Mystic Mog,
From the tone of your post I suspect that you are LibDem - am I correct?
If so, please be advised that the District and County LibDeb Councillors are nothing but a joke in East Sussex - I cannot name one of them that takes their responsibility as a Councillor seriously and it is embarrassing to the LibDem party that none of them represent their constituents.
Just my personal thoughts!

Dear Sir / Madam,
Thank you for your e-mail.
The parking regulations on the streets in Lewes are determined by the
County Council whilst those in car parks (other than at County Hall) are
determined by Lewes District Council. You would need, therefore, to
lobby both authorities if you wished to achieve the abolition of the
scheme. People sometimes do this by means of a petition presented to
the Council through their local Councillor.
Abolition of the parking scheme would be a long process, there would
need to be consultation with all interested parties. If it were decided
in principle to go ahead with abolishing the scheme, any objections
would be considered by the relevant committee of each Council before
deciding whether to confirm the Orders cancelling the scheme.

For what it was worth here's my reply:
What you are saying is that attempting to change the scheme is much like wading through mud then?
The parking scheme is just plain bad... The huge majority of Lewesians and visitors to Lewes hate it and NCP run it like some sort private jack-booted empire.
There are petitions in various Lewes locations at the moment, being signed quite eagerly it seems.
The sooner this scheme is dumped (or at the very least relaxed) the better... the only effects it has had (apart from lining the pockets of NCP and the Council) is to increase lawlessness (and make it more acceptable... there is considerable sympathy in Lewes with those who blow up the parking machines) and make people even more disillusioned with the council and those we elect to work for us.
