Overdoing it a bit

Aren't people overdoing it just a little bit about the Smith piece in the Sunday Times? Yes, a blanket accusation of racism is annoying - but then we know inside ourselves whether we're racist or not, so why over-react? If we are racist then we'll probably be quite proud of what he says, and if we're not then the bloke is wrong and that's all there is to it. Smith is a journalist who works for an employer most self-respecting people wouldn't touch with a bargepole - why not just let him stew in his own rancid juice rather than give the impression we're being a little bit too defensive?

I think the problem is that he has named and shamed very specific and easily identifiable people who have no right of reply in a national newspaper. If they really want to do a serious analysis of racism in the provinces - and there is no doubt it exists - the paper should have chosen another less biased writer.
Weird really though - since when has racism been on the agenda for Murdoch rags ??

Brixtonbelle touches on two important points. Firstly, that the article was biased and secondly that the individuals have no opportunity to reply. Having printed the article the Sunday Times should now provide an opportunity to one or more other people to write an article providing an alternative view of Lewes.

I didn't want to get involved in this, but... Mike - I can't see how there could be an 'alternative view of Lewes'. You can give 'an alternative view' about any story about any place at any time. I'm sure we've got our share of racists and on that score we're no worse or better than most places. But I can see a point for any identifiable individual demanding a right of reply - and I'd consider taking legal advice as well if I were them.

We will forget about it, when the Sunday Times has apologised to the Sussex Express, Bonfire Societies, schools and residents of Lewes, for publishing an unsubstantiated rant masquerading as a piece of journalism.

sorry. Pleas chill out and stop talking about this. No one cares true lewesians or whatever we call ourselves know this is not true, it is unfortunate he mentions people in his article that cant reply but that shows how silly he has been and i suspect will be spoken to about his actions
