Any ideas why the old newmarket garage between Lewes and Falmer has never been re-opened ? Think i read somewhere that the fuel tanks leaked but i would've imagined that this site would've been an absolute goldmine.
I'm surprised the mobile burger van hasn't done something with the site....plenty of parking etc there.

I did hear that there could have been leakage into the water table but that the garage on the opposite side of the road was on the same level, but was not affected.

I Think the tanks let the water in the Winterbourne stream runs underground thro the site ( and not always underground ) there has certainly been a history off water in the fuel, I'm surprised our Traveler friends haven't made a home there

huge changes in regulations and requirements made it unprofitable to redevelope, the tankerage was not particualy high, cost of decontamination is also high so easy answer leave the site to rot,

I made a few enquiries about this site a few years ago. Here is part of the letter I received "BP are currently looking at decommissioning the site but there are a few environmental issues that they are trying to deal with before this can be undertaken. BP have no plans to dispose of the site either leasehold or freehold until they have finalized these issues"

Traveller sites are needed in Sussex, and travellers would doubtless be willing to undertake the necessary groundworks.
