New shared path

What a great addition to the town. The new shared use path from Wiley's bridge to Hamsey is a really good idea, enabling traffic-free cycling along the river to the quiet lanes around Hamsey and up to Barcombe. Where did this come from? And when will it be properly sign posted as shared use?

Very welcome, especially to someone who skidded to a halt on his bike today and only just avoided being mangled by some bitch in a BMW who pulled out without looking !

Good heavens! I had no idea you were a fellow cyclist. My opinion of you has improved no end. Glad you survived the incident. I had a few words with some gammon driving a Mercedes down Cliffe High Street. He seemed to think I shouldn't be cycling from the South Street end, waving his hand and not moving over. Amazingly he was apologetic when I told him it was two way for bikes. Take care, Tom.

I often cycle Up Cliffe high street and ya me great delight in telling the indignant motorists to have a better look at the signs the next time the come through Cliffe (for no applicable reason)

I didn’t realise this went all the way to hamsey, where is the access at the other end?

It ends at Ivors Lane, close to Hamsey Church. It is currently designated as a public footpath, so technically cycling is not permitted, although only a civil offence of trespass. I've been trying to get information about a possible change to 'shared use' status from ESCC (who say it's nothing to do with them) and the South Downs National Park. No answers yet. Mind you, cyclists have been using the riverbank footpath south of Lewes for years with no problem. I'm not sure if the gates near Hamsey are suitable for bikes as I've never used this path all the way. I go by the Landport Road track to Offham and beyond.

I drove out of Morris Road recently, and had to brake for a cyclist travelling east along Cliffe High Street. He ignored the STOP sign that gives priority to Morris Road. He must also be deaf; as there was no response when I informed him of the signage.

There is no excuse for that. Cyclists take their lives in their own hands when they ignore stop markings. I guess because it is straight on from the cobbled part it's easy to miss the signs. I must admit I rarely stop there but I am fully aware of the danger of someone coming from Morris Road. I'm also sure that his life was saved by you respecting the 20mph zone, and being alert to other road users' mistakes. Well done.

Back to the new path. I've heard from South Downs National Park Authority, and it's bad news, I'm afraid. As usual, the natural response to an opportunity to improve cycling in the area is a definite NO! It is a footpath, and cycling is not and will not be permitted. It is down to ESCC to change the designation, which of course is not going to happen. So Lewes folk have been given this ugly yellow scar along the riverbank for no other purpose other than to allow vehicle access for the flood defence work. The person to contact if you feel strongly about this is
Andy Gattiker MCMA, MIPROW
National Trails & Rights of Way Lead
South Downs National Park Authority

It’s handy for walkers in the winter as it’s usually a quagmire.
Funny how it wasn’t an ugly yellow scar when you thought you could cycle on it.

You're not wrong, Hyena. I would have seen the benefit to Lewes. Now it's less so.

So it's only cycle paths which are a benefit to Lewes - well maintained flood defences are of little consequence! After all, it's not as if Lewes ever suffers from flooding!

That's silly. I was referring to the ugly yellow path on top of the flood defences, which are of course absolutely essential. Some people will look for anything to have a go at cyclists.

With supercilious attitudes like your's and their righteous behaviour, they're easy pickings!

Your's? That's a new one. I've never seen an apostrophe so badly misplaced. And as for being superior to others (that's what 'supercilious' means, in case you weren't sure), it all depends on which others you are thinking of. Please explain how cyclists are prone to "righteous behaviour" above and beyond anyone else.

"only a civil offence of trespass" seems pretty righteous to me!

So you consider it a serious, perhaps criminal, offence for someone to ride a bike on a path arbitrarily determined to be suitable only for walkers? How is it righteous to remind people that it is not a criminal offence? How noble of you to be outraged on behalf of land owners! Where no harm is possibly done, this rule is a nonsense.

What a laugh! Someone on Lewes Present is trying to pin the blame for this path on cyclists! Why haven't South Downs National Park or the Environment Agency bothered to explain what they are up to, and what the new surface is for?
