Well it would certainly save us the trip to Newhaven McDonalds for that quick munchie fix!

For some reason, I still won't believe it till I see it. As for the outrage (of there being a McDonald's in the sacred town of Lewes), just you wait till we no-deal brexit and open ourselves up to deep US "investment", we will have McDonald's stores everywhere along with missile silos in every village.

Why are they building a ruddy McDonald’s? In my opinion, it’s an establishment committed to raising childhood obesity rates in every town where it has a restaurant. Build something like an Italian deli that will serve the residents well and be aesthetically pleasing. Preposterous proposal in the first place.

Just hope it's big enough or they won't be able to cope.

Ronald McDonald could walk among us Lewes residents and remain virtually undetected.

This town is full of clowns.......just in case you didn't grasp my original comment.

@Deedoid - I think the parents may have to take a little responsibility in the size of their kids (medical grounds excepted).

As a point of pedantry, this is not a planning application, it's just a pre-application enquiry - a finger in the air to see what the local planning authority would make of the idea.

This will not happen. I am making a formal objection, as is my husband. It will break something that is very special about little Lewes, especially for people like us who have moved and invested here, and lower the value of property in general.

Wow, I really thought "Jennifer" would have been more supportive of the idea.

To be fair, Jenny from the block, if you swapped your fancy meals out at Cote and went for a Maccy D's instead, it would easily offset the potential loss in property values down Wisteria Lane. You're welcome, I won't invoice you for the financial advice on this occasion.

Poor Jennifer - moves to special little Lewes then objects to a proposed Maccy D because it will (allegedly) lower the return on her investment. 'This will not happen' - how arrogant can you get?!

To: the person who mentioned Côte. It is a chain, mass market catering outlet, not a restaurant. It employs cooks not a chef. It is not to our, or anyone in society's, standard. Why does anyone, who knows how a restaurant should be, use such places?

The vocal minority is seriously pretentious on this one, aren't they?
Deedoid, that's not how business works. This isn't the council going "let's have a McDonald's", this is McDonald's looking to come here. If you want an Italian Delicatessen then go convince someone to put the money into opening one here, don't get annoyed at Maccy's for wanting to spend their money investing here.
Sweetjopie, what the hell does this have tondo with plastic? Ignoring the fact that McDonald's is currently in a plastic purge anyway and is heavily and actively reducing its plastic use, small businesses are often the worst offenders for plastic cups and the like because they have less public eye on them and smaller overheads, meaning the cheap and affordable option is more viable both financially and in terms of public perception.
Jennifer, If Côte was truly "not to our, or anyone in society's, standard" it wouldn't have lasted opening week. Also, having tried the food there when I got some vouchers a while back, it's actually bloody nice.
And, most importantly, to all three of you:
Yes, our town does have a culture of encouraging organic food, expensive eateries and boutique businesses. You know what else our town has? Normal people who don't walk around with a wallet-full of fifties, comparing the spirituality of the yoga classes here to the ones they did in London (there is no comparison to be made, by the way. They're just stretching and breathing exercises and if you think otherwise, you've been duped by marketing).
This attitude of wanting to preserve your little high-class paradise completely disregards the locals that built and work in this town who are continually getting pushed out because of rising prices and can't afford to be spending £20+/head when they want to treat themselves to a takeaway. If you don't like McDonald's, you don't have to go there, but since my average meal when I cook at home works out about £1.50 per person (because I'm an amazing cook who is also thrifty), on those rare occasions where an ingredient hasn't survived to the day I wanted to use it or something has gone wrong with my shop or I'm busy and tired and just not feeling it that night, I'd welcome an affordable option of takeaway and I think many others would as well.
