I've just been watching a fascinating programme about the buildings of Lewes - part of the Six More English Towns series, presented by Alec Clifton Taylor. I vaguely remember the series being on, but wouldn't have been interested in watching some old duffer droning on about buildings. However, now that I'm a bit of a old duffer myself, it seems much more interesting. It's a real eye-opener and if you haven't seen it, it's worth a look.

I recall it was rather disconcerting seeing traffic come along Cliffe High Street in the opposite direction.

True, but overall it's remarkable how little the appearance of the town has changed. Long may it last!

Aha the twittens are a corruption of betwixt and between and the town is full of tiled facades, that was well worth watching. I`m afraid he didn't get up to the Nevill.....( I jest)

I see the courthouse is now being destroyed, ratepayer owned properties are being sold in secret to developers, no doubt at a knock down price. Corruption is rife. Thank you SDNPA for destroying our town.

resident, the SDNP don't make those desicions, LDC do. The park only gets involved with BIG projects, like the cement works at Shoreham and North st.

The SDNPA most definitely made the final decision regarding the Old Magistrates Court - Unfortunately most of the panel do not live anywhere near Lewes and seemed to have little interest - except for 2 panel members who do live in the area and they were strongly against it! What a waste of a perfectly sound building that could have been converted or re used (some say it could not but this is not the case) but is now undergoing drastic demolition to make way for the dreaded Premier Inn development.

SDNPA contract LDC to do the job. Which is why they are responsible for LDC planner's regular cock ups and peculiar behaviour. Several people 'close to the Council' have indicated that SDNPA think LDC so questionable that they want to bring the decision making process in-house. The ACT programme is very charming, although some of the information is not necessarily accurate. Eg info about tiles and twittens. What he definitely understands is the collective importance of so many historic buildings. LDC prefer to disrupt that effect by allowing new buildings to dominate the streetscape.
