Anyone else think it's such a shame that M&S were obliged to keep some of the old Esso staff? They are always so rude and unwelcoming.

I was just going to post a thread about the un-smiling lady in there. She is so 'abrupt' to put it politely! Obviously has not gone through the M&S customer service training!

We are talking about a fuel filling station that also sells (probably overpriced, like most filling stations) food and drink of the M&S brand. I use such places to top up with fuel; it is a chore, like having to use the toilet. I am more concerned with the length of the queue, and people faffing about buying lottery tickets, than other things they have to offer. I don't care if they are rude- I just want to fill my tank and be on my way.

I only go in there when I'm very drunk and walking home and need food to mop up the alcohol. They may have been rude to me but I really wouldn't have noticed!

I reckon I know the ones you're talking about, OP. They can definitely be a bit to-the-point when dealing serving you, but in the main I've found them normally quite pleasant! I'm sure everyone has their bad days.
Anyway it's a petrol station, I don't think they generally have the expectation of being bastions of excellent customer care. Fill up, get in, get out, drive off.

Why would anyone go there to buy petrol, when it is cheaper just round the corner at Tesco? And MUCH cheaper if you buy in Eastbourne, rather than Lewes.

They are awful. I do avoid.
I'm sure they have contests to see who can say the least amount of words to a customer.
Unfortunately they are not M&S staff as they are usually quite good with their re-training for crap staff. I'm not sure if BP have the same standards for staff

Call me old fashioned - I go in there, I greet the staff respectfully with the time of day, I make amiable small talk, i make my purchases, I crack a joke, they smile politely, I smile, I leave - dealing with the public is a thankless task - be civil and you'll get civility back
