Mackerel needs to be eaten very fresh to taste good. something to buy from the fisherman who caught it this morning. By the time it has reached its supermarket sell by date, best avoided. Not unsafe (unless it has been through that factory where they provide new sell-by dates when the old ones expire) but not nice.
