Heavy lorries, including veolia are causing road damage, plus are causing house to shake, causing noise and disturbance. Does anyone have a contact for the Southover campaign group? I would like to join a campaign that includes the issue for the whole of Lewes including Malling Street, Malling Hill, Brighton Road etc. many thanks.

Start by suggesting alternative routes?
Restricting lorries on Malling Street/Hill or Brighton Road could slightly (to say the least) mess up the lorry companies, not to mention trade into and out of Lewes.

They could also try enforcing the weight limit on the C7.
A big lorry coming up the C7 has to go through Southover or up Winterbourne Hollow. It's not uncommon for traffic to be held up while a big truck tries to make the left turn at the Swan.
I blame it on drivers relying on satnav. You'd only have to look at a map of Lewes for a few moments to realise that it's not a suitable route for a 30-ton truck.

There's a big problem with large articulated lorries taking a left turn into Malling St and trying to continue on some sort of Cliffe High St short cut before they are forced to turn around and retreat. A hugely ineffective sign opposite the car park by St Thomas' church warns lorry drivers, but by the time they've got that far, it's too late, with ensuing chaos.

I could start a petition but would like to know if there is one already in existence, or a group in Lewes working on this issue?
Slarty, I'm sure that there are many decent local lorry drivers and companies who have respect for local residents, but there are others who obviously don't. I think being woken by a very heavy, or continental sized, lorry speeding outside your home, ignoring the legal speed limit, causing damage to your home (vibrations and cracks), and to the road, causing even more noise from loose manhole covers etc., is not acceptable.I feel the same way about car drivers who are endangering lives by speeding in these areas outside of school-run and work peak travel hours. There needs to be speed enforcement and some alternative to these super-sized lorries which used to be banned on A roads.

Campaigner... our petition was a single issue petition. In the process of collecting signatures it became clear that a lot of people are fed up with the streets, eg Grange Road, Cliffe High Street and many others. The money would appear not to be there to repair our roads and pavements, or the will to consider traffic weight and flow or safety of pedestrians and cyclists. I fear our roads are destined to rival some third world countries. And we the County Town!
