Local party politics

The mechanism of organising local government through political parties is flawed. It has limited uses from a tribal and/or voting bloc perspective. It also can bind social groups much as involvement with religious organisations or supporting a local footie club can do. But councillors do not control economies or decide on how we organise our society. Councillors are public servants elected by their constituents. No councillor is actually going to, for instance, stop immigration, close down nuclear plants or reinstate socialism or whatever; they are paid to do the right thing for the area they have been elected by. Councillors should be judged on their individual merits, or otherwise, and not on what particular gang they have joined at some time. Well done Matt.
