Is it true that, as part of the current roadworks, the Market Street cobbles will be replaced by tarmac?

They've had lots of problems with it over the years so I wouldn't be surprised. Not sure why the road surface was changed in the first place - maybe to encourage the traffic to slow down as it's a narrow road? It'll be a shame if they do because I quite like it.

I am sure the cost of relaying the cobbles properly on a suitably prepared base whenever the surface has to be lifted has nothing to do with it....

I would / will be sorry to see them go from an aesthetical point of view. However it doesn't half hurt rattling down there in the bus on a bad back day.

Those frigging "cobbles" are lumps of concrete and have only been there 20 years. Egg on the face of the person who has just set up a campaign to save them - hee hee.

Paddy, there is a ban on saying ' hee hee ' or ' tee hee ' anywhere on the Lewes forum. Punishment is litter picking for 1 hour.

@paddy actually they are only about 6 years old , the road was closed for two weeks and obviously a substandard job was done but i guess at an expensive cost to ratepayers . I believe the road was originally tarmac and was cobbled in the 70s .

It wasn't that long ago, Fleamarket, I can remember them doing it and I didn't move to Lewes until 1991.
I can also remember the failed attempts to paint yellow lines on them. The lines lasted a few weeks and then wore off. They had at least 2 goes at it before they gave up.

Yes, they were put down in the early 1990s (tarmac before) and have been a problem ever since which resulted in them being taken up an relaid once. A nightmare on a bike or on the bus.

@Paddy, I think you'll find they are granite setts, so not 'just lumps of concrete' at all.
