Hello
Lewes is beautiful and I have been considering moving there for a while. I am now thinking of buying a place on Friars Walk. Is there anything I should know about it?
One concern is whether the Georgian houses there have thin walls. Really keen on quiet.
And is there likely to be a lot of foot traffic? The houses front directly on to the street.
How much of a problem is parking?
If anyone was kind enough to answer, I'd be very grateful.

You will need to get a residents Parking Permit but once you have got that it is usually easy enough to find a space in Friars Walk itself or nearby Court Road.
When buying a house of that age always best to get a full survey and take particular care to get roof timbers checked

The houses are lovely but they are very close to the road which is surprisingly busy. The traffic noise would bother me, unless the house has really good double glazing.
And the air quality may not be good at peak times of day when there's lots of queuing traffic.

Thanks very much for these responses. Hm, food for thought.

I remember when we were buying our place in a different part of Lewes the surveyor saying he thought it was a miracle the houses in Friars Walk were still standng as over the years they were increasingly leaning towards the river.

What about Lansdowne Place? There is a house there, which seems to be of the same, Georgian vintage as those on Friars Walk.

Try the Nevill?

The OP appears to want a Georgian house, @Local99, there aren't any of those on the Nevill!
Lansdown Place is no better than Friars Walk imo, they're basically the same road. Any through traffic using Friars Walk goes along Lansdown Place as well.
People use it to get to the station from the eastern side of town and it's an alternative route to the tunnel if you're going out of town to the south or west. And when the high street and East Street are gridlocked, a lot of people use it to get to the A275.

Hm. Thanks for these further replies. Does sound as though it would be perhaps too busy. Maybe most of those houses are rental for that reason. A shame, because they look as though they have much potential.
If anyone has suggestions for parts of town with old houses and peace and quiet, I'd be grateful.
Simon

Used to live on Friars walk and it was fine. Very handy for the station in the morning, I could run out the house as I heard the train pulling in! Also great for Cliffe shops. Bottom of town so the big floods hit it hard. Also some more frequent water problems because of all the new houses on the flood plain - ask if the cellar floods.

Thanks, David 2. You weren't bothered by the traffic or people walking right past front window?
