Walking along the river north from Willy's bridge yesterday I noticed one of the white houses opposite has a new weathervane which looks like a copy of the lion in West gate Street. Has anyone else noticed it? I have to say I'd love one and wonder who made it.

I would love a White Lion too!
I haven't seen the one near Willys Bridge, but the next time I'm down there I shall take a look.

It isn't white like the one in West gate Street it's black. I think the one in West gate Street is a copy and the original is in the Town Hall and has been renovated to show it's original bronze (?). Can anyone confirm?

The Original 18th Century White Lion Inn Sign is in the Town Hall by all accounts.
Its Heraldic in origin and a part of the Armorial of Simon de Montfort. Made by Lewes metal worker by the name of Larwill.
There are 3 versions most likely due to people liking it so much that they have got to have it!

Paul Harrison in the Foundry Workshops (Phoenix Estate) made both the weathervane and a copy of the original lion for the Town Council. The original is in a box in the Assembly Rooms now, and the copy high on the wall in West gate. Call him if you want to commission one - 07765 456057

My surprise birthday weathervane was indeed made by Paul Harrison and Mike Patterson from the Phoenix Estate. And if you think Lewes looks good from over the river he looks even better close up! Mike is also the creator of the mobile chairs and sofas for those of you who have come across these at various Lewes events.Paul and Mike are both brilliantly creative!

Celine: I know it shouldn't but it annoys me so much it's = it is, it's is not possesive. Thus your "it's original bronze.." read "it is original bronze.."

Streeter, Twittener, apologies for ruining your weekend but the combination of small smartphone screen, stubby fingers and predictive text does lead to the occasional grammatical slip-up. Not nearly as interesting at the weathervane though! I'm hoping they will sprout all over Lewes - wouldn't that be fab??!!
