Lights in the sky

As we celebrated New Year here in Malvern a very similar occurence happened for 30 minutes from a northerly direction a series of fast moving lights which appeared to be flying past quite quickly and perhaps at 5,000 feet approached in two columns from the north. One column some in pairs then turned right when above the Malvern Hills and headed towards Hereford some of them returning some 20 minutes later. This column of some 20 lights appeared approx every minute some singly and others in pairs. The second set came from the direction of Birmingham passed over Worcester City and headed towards Cheltenham again generally in pairs. There was no sound whatsoever, no navigation lights just a single dull yellow glow as though from below the object. The brightness did not diminish until they were some distance away. The lights were not aircraft landing lights, the whole occurence happened over a 40 minute period (or at least when I first saw them) and were approx 35-50 in number.
