'Lidl' Car Park

I see the euphemistically named (by LDC) 'Lidl' car park is no more, now surrounded with 8' high boarding and a locked entrance. With the loss of those 100(?) or so reasonably priced spaces I guess it will become even more difficult to secure a space in Tesco's car park if I want to walk into the Cliffe (or further afield) to do a bit of shopping in our wonderful local shops. However perhaps it does mean that Tesco may have some (limited) competition soon if a new Lidl is indeed to rise phoenix-like on the site. Anyone know what's happening?

I'm pretty sure it was called the Aldi car park, not Lidl, on account of it being the site for a new Aldi store, one condition of the building of which was that they couldn't do it for a year and the site got to be used as a car park while they were building the new cop shop (In a car park). The waiting period has now finished and we can all look forward to a new Aldi store which will, one assumes, not take up the whole car park and have it's own parking spaces for people wishing to peruse the discounted joy within the shiny new emporium.

Unless of course they want to buy anything on the huge list of things they're not allowed to sell.

You could always get the bus into town. I get the bus sometimes and I only live up in Malling. It's terribly lazy I know but a better bet than driving in and trying to find somewhere to park. Alternatively, if you're shopping on the weekend, park in the County Hall car park and have a wander around the fine local shops at the top end of town for a change. (Pro-tip, Court Road is cheaper for two hours parking than the car park behind the precinct and South Street is a proper bargain for a whole day assuming you can find a space down there).

It is Aldi, not Lidl, who applied for permission to build there. I must confess, I confuse the two and had to look it up. Of course, the permission allows anyone to build the scheme, so they could sell the plot with that permission. However, i don't have any information to suggest that they have sold it.
Aldi's original application was made in 2006, but was withdrawn. They made another application in 2007 and again withdrew it. They finally got a planning permission granted last Wednesday. The delay wasn't a planning condition. However, Lewes DC did lease the land for 18 months to use as a car park.
