Lewes town, Friday night

Went out with a mate on Friday night for a few beers and a curry. I know it was cold (for some people) and England were playing but the town was DEAD !!!
Started in the Elly....that was ok but i even managed to get a seat at the tables. At 10pm we went to the John Harvey and apart from a few regular old lushes who were pi$$ed out of their brains, it was empty.
So we thought we'd try the new Volley. At 10.40, we were turned away saying it was closed....there was 2 other people in there and they were just leaving.
So we went up to the crown...again just 2 people in there.
Off for a curry at 11.15 and Spice merchant was empty too !!!
Did i just pick the wrong night to go out ? couldn't believe the Volley....a once buzzing hostlery is now a dead wine bar with comfy leather sofas that was closed at 10.40....maybe a typical sign of how Lewes is going !!!
Rant over

Yes, found the town and pubs eerily quiet saturday night as well. Everyone hibernating post bonfire?

Facter in people saving for christmas as well. I've found Lewes quieter since the smoking ban though.

Unfortunately, Greene King pubs are off limits due to the god awful ale they make.

went out on a Friday night too (only for the second time this year) and was pleased that I could sit at the bar in both the JHT and the Gardeners - and hold a conversation, couldn't agree more FA - thank God they relented in the Lewes Arms though

The credit crunch will have made a big difference but with out a doubt the smoking Ban is what has caused the nose dive in pub use and cut the number of bar jobs in lewes. Before the ban The Dorest was completley smoke free and did Ok but now none of the Lewes Pubs are doing good trade. The problem is that Lewes now has zero smoking venues and is over supplied with smoke free ones. So the overall foot fall is massively down. It seems as if Lewes Council would rather see job losses and Pubs shut up for good than allow choice for people.
