Any views on schools in Lewes and the surrounding areas? Primary and secondary. This is for a friend who is thinking of moving here.

Let me guess: is your friend moving from London, or a similar large city?
Out here in Hicksville we haven't wrecked most of our schools through the frantic rumour and innuendo that characterises the pushy parents of the megalopolises, trying to ensure their cossetted little princes and princesses get more than their fair share. Most schools have aspects that are great and aspects that could be improved. The best approach by far is for parents to support their local school, politely and if necessary firmly, to ensure that the needed improvements happen, and that is what happens in Lewes and most of East Sussex. Indeed, in most of England.

Good grief, Fairmeadow. That's so prejudiced and negative. First you jump to a whole bundle of conclusions and then you sprinkle acid all over them. You've forgotten to complain about Londoners pushing up prices.

Schoolhunter, if you search "schools" on this forum you'll find several threads discussing the various local primaries. There's one secondary school, the Priory, which Ofsted rates as outstanding. Pretty well all the local children go there. Many go on to Brighton sixth form colleges, although there's also South Downs college here in Lewes.

Lewes is a nice, friendly place to live and a great place to bring up kids. Don't mind the sour hate-all-city-types you'll encounter on this forum - your friends will be very welcome.

What an incredibly ignorant comment. As if people in the countryside - the barbour and welly-clad hordes - have never worried in the slightest bit about getting their offspring into the best schools and giving them enormous head starts in life.

SQ, I think many children also go to Chailey and Ringmer (but you've probably never heard of those). I agree with Fairmeadow.

Why would I "not have heard of Ringmer and Chailey" schools? The majority of secondary pupils in Lewes attend Priory as far as I know, unless you have evidence to the contrary.

I was trying to be helpful to someone who foolishly expects something called the Lewes forum to be where one might seek advice from local people about local facilities. Instead what they get is bigoted nonsense about how city folk with their selfish ideas aren't welcome here. As much as anything, my response was to try to show that we're not all small-minded people ready to jump to ludicrous conclusions. If what I've said about the schools is actually, factually, wrong or partial then please do contribute to the discussion but don't use my response to stoke up your prejudices.
