Article about market towns that have seen the highest property price rises 2008-14. Lewes is the fifth highest, and they have a paragraph about it, as follows:
Once called Brighton’s spinsterish older sister, Lewes is better than that. The town centre may have a slightly somnolent air, but the residents know how to party, particularly on Bonfire Night, when the place goes mad.
Shoppers do well here. The farmers’ market is one of the most vibrant in the county, and there are some great little bookshops and antique shops in the old town centre.
Throw in the South Downs, Glyndebourne and the Sussex coast and you can see why Lewes is booming.
House prices have risen by 29pc in the past six years, making it one of the best-performing market towns in the country.
“Buyers will pay a premium to live in a market town, particularly one full of quirks and character,” says Richard Mann of Savills Haywards Heath.

interesting, so what people actually want to live in are qauint oldy worldy towns, not new builds that look like Manchester-and the term "Old town" re Lewes suggests that it also has new town elemnet (like Hastings) -Santon shopping mall ? it isn't approved yet.

Glad i managed to beat some of the % rise by buying in 2011. Annoyingly though, many of my friend leave this town due to unrealistic house prices - but this has been mentioned many times on this forum

Lewes should have its own minimum wage to mirror what London has. Lewes' minimum wage is thae same as towns whos houses are priced at £60k. If someone in Liverpool cant afford a £60k house on £6.50 an hour how are Lewes residents ever supposed to afford a house for £250k on the same wage
