Lewes XR Bike Swarm

I can't believe the venom directed at this gentle and responsible rally by so many Lewes Present "members". Thankfully they are a pathetic minority of Lewes residents. What is their gripe? is it against XR, or against cycling, or the supposed breaches of lockdown rules when of course there are none? There's no compulsion to wear masks in the street, or even helmets or high vis jackets, and it's almost impossible for cyclists to get closer than i metre apart (which is the current social distancing distance). Well done, all taking part.

One metre plus with a mask, if you can't manage 2 metres.

Ferret, LP ‘members’ ? You must be one of them if you read the post. I reckon you’re crazy old John Somerville. Middle class, lives up the Nevill, too much time on your hands, graffiti artist by night

@Blatant Liar Anyone can read the posts without being a member. You only have to join if you want to comment. I did briefly but quit because I couldn't stand the politics of the man who set it up, or the appalling ignorance and general bigotry of so many contributors. Not to mention the widespread illiteracy. The site gives Lewes a really bad image.

...but back to cycling: walking from Cliffe High Street towards Tesco, I passed through the passage into North Court. Two cyclists rode towards me. I thought that they were giving cyclists a bad name by riding where they shouldn't, but then checked for signs saying cycling was prohibited. There is one at the Cliffe High Street end, but not at the brewery end. Just an "End of Route" sign. These are only advisory, and do not compel cyclists to dismount. I'll contact the council to see what they think.

I always get off here unless it's very early or late and no one is around. People seem to lack empathy for others unfortunately.....but then I'm a slow coach so I must lack empathy for the driven souls who are always in a hurry?

I always cycle round by the Dorset rather than get off my bike. I've contacted the council about lack of a sign, but I'm not expecting much given their failure to improve signage in Cliffe High Street showing that cycling is permitted in both directions.

Perhaps XR could organise a swarm to stop the National Suicide of these continuing lockdowns and completely pointless mask wearing, fully bespoke or otherwise. I can't understand why none of the social justice warriors on the forum have the least objection to the totalitarian measures the government is imposing. It's as if we're putting an economic sanction on ourselves instead of evil foreign tyrants who want to take away our freedoms! It's Christmas every day for the corporate giants like Amazon whose grip on business is tightening exponentially every day. I notice that Amazon are opening bookshops now, having driven most independents out of business, in robot, cashless stores. Surely this is something to swarm about?

The ones I feel really sorry for are the paranoid schizophrenics. How on earth are they supposed to cope when the evil powers that be are pretending that there's a lethal virus circulating just so that they can control our lives, and what's left of our minds.

A reply Matt Hancock would be proud of. Avoid replying to any of the points raised and waffle about something else, subtly, if a sledgehammer could be so described, denigrating the questioner. Do you hold a senior position in the conservative party? You certainly deserve one.

Really Tom? Your post that you accuse ferret of avoiding is well up to your normal standard in that it completely ignores any of the preceding discussion, makes ludicrous statements without any supporting evidence and pretty much closes down all discussion. Ferret makes several interesting points about cycling in Lewes, you respond with a diatribe about something else entirely and you expect ferret to start talking about your topic. Start your own topic of you have something to say and see if anyone responds to it. If you have nothing to say on the subject of the thread then say nothing.
I find it interesting that the ignorant rants on cycling you used to expect to see here like jumping lights, not using cycle paths, not paying for roads etc can now be found on symes' site. Why is it only in this country that there is such a ridiculous attitude towards people who cycle?

Ah, it's working again! Never voted Tory in my life so it's very unlikely that they would give me a job at any level. I'm sorry but I can't take any of the other points you made seriously enough to want to reply. I can't help you with your anxieties about the virus, the government, Bill Gates or Amazon. Probably no-one can.

Ah Nev, unexpected but a delight as usual. Your concern over the ethics of posting and my deviance from them is salutary and I am suitably chasened. What are your opinions on the habit of making defamatory statements and innuendos? But stay, I'm at it again, what's this to do with swarms?

Now, back to Lewes cycling. LDC washed their hands of the North Court issue, and I've had no reply from ESCC to my request for a new Cyclists Dismount sign, or perhaps the removal of the cycling prohibition sign at the Cliffe High Street end. In the meantime, I hope no-one gets hurt, or shouted at by some stroppy gammon defending the rights of the nation.

Never seemed like a problem to me ferret. Defamatory statements without support I am against Tom. Innuendo is great. Let me know if you see either of them though. I'll have a large one.

The inconsistent signage at the north and south ends of North Court was reported to East Sussex Highways in November 2017. The case status shows that it has been "Referred to Another Authority" but there is no indication as to who this authority was and what action (if any) was taken by this authority.
This is just an accident waiting to happen as the south end of North Court is narrow and before the Covid-19 crisis was often a popular location for begging. It is no place for ridden cycles and it is probably an offence to even push one on the pavement under the shop archway (though this will no doubt be challenged at length by the cycling advocates).
It probably doesn't help that the official "No Cycling" sign could easily be confused for "Beware of Cyclists" and should be supplemented by "No Cycles" in words at both ends of North Court. Given that North Court contains a number of shops that it is reasonable to want to access by cycle the restriction should really (and possibly does) only apply to the pavement under the shop archway.

@unconvinced Thanks for that information, I'll use it when I actually get a response from "the Traffic and Road Safety team", which is where my request has now gone, according to the Customer Service Manager at ESCC. I can't see how it could be a major expense to attach a Cyclists Dismount sign to the sign at the brewery end. Or to scrap the ban and let everyone just behave courteously and carefully. Shared use paths work very well in most other countries in Europe.
