Why was the Post Office closed today? Did somebody die? Have they all got the plague? Did they think it was Sunday? Was it snowing? Has it closed down for good? Are they on strike?

Can't answer your question but i absolutely detest the post office since they shut down loads of small PO's in villages and estates around here.
I have to sit and watch that tub of lard on the advert going on about the people's post office and how bloody wonderful they are.....i s**t em.

I went to the Post Office and met a crowd of bewildered people - someone said that none of the staff live nearby and thus unable to open branch.
I decided to purchase stamps from machine on wall, but had to guess price as not displayed (and no-one knew the costs of stamps) - no adverts for postage costs in windows either!
For future reference - 1st class - 39p and 2nd class = 30p

Funny how every other shop in Lewes managed to open up. I wouldn't have thought that every Lewes trader lived locally. Anyway, somebody managed to get there because they put a sign in the window.

Goes to show their strategy is flawed. When we had sub-postoffices, where the postmaster lived on the premises eg Priory St, they could still function whatever the weather. On Landport it's especially difficult getting around, it's a disgrace they would't allow it to stay even with the offer of a council subsidy.

Just remember the poor staff of the post Office aren't responsible for the crap management. My local postperson is worth one of those business awards, and you have to admire the staff at Lewes for not laughing all day at the poor lost soul of a new guy who has to lurk around the endless queue trying to pursuade people to sign up for things in a completely unconfidential 'office' where the photobooth used to be.

Is the post office open today?
I have just been trying to find their phone number with out success...
Found an 0845 central number which was utterly useless.

They probably were closed because of Health & Safety reasons. Some regulation dictates that there must be a minimum number of staff present if I'm not mistaken. E.g. a one-man-band is not allowed to open up. I use the post office in Seaford. Large and warm, usually empty, and if it's busy the queue is moving along fast. It's only a short train ride from Lewes and same walking distance to me than the Lewes post office! Plus I get a view of the Downs and Ouse. PLUS in Seaford I don't have to put up with this highly irritating and useless queue lurker as LTR pointed out.

URGENT MESSAGE
Is there any reason why the main Lewes post office phone number is not clearly displayed on the post office website????????
After all, we all live in a 'caring, sharing, open, free society', so what's the big secret? I came on this webpage because I clicked on 'contact', and no, I don't wish to choose from 3300 Chinese restaurants!
I simply wanted to know about delays of post during this bad weather. Are we never to talk to each other again!

Unless someone has an old phone book lurking with a local number for the Post Office, all I can find is 0845 722 3344

That is the number I rang Tess.I was trying to find out if Lewes post office was open last Saturday (it was,but the website says open 'til 5.30,when in fact it shuts at 12.30...) and I was expecting to be put through to a customer services person, but no,the automated voice wittered on for ages about different options, but at no point was I put through the anyone real.
I want to know when/if they are open so I will ask them their phone number next time I am in there.
I expect to be given it as Lewes is the only number not anywhere online or anywhere in the phone books.
