Hello,
Message to fellow dog owners only please.... As we're soon to move to the area, we are trying to work out which parks and open spaces we are allowed to walk our dog in for everyday walks close by. We prefer enclosed parks so he can play without risk of running into roads etc. Correct me if i'm wrong but I've been surprised how unfriendly the town is toward dogs considering there are dogs everywhere you turn when walking about the place!
So far we understand the following;
- Grange Gardens NO DOGS
- Baxters Field NO DOGS
- The Paddock .. NO DOGS??? I had previously thought this was dog friendly but I appear to be wrong?!
- Pells Recreation Ground NO DOGS
- Priory Park DOGS ALLOWED
- Railway Fields DOGS ALLOWED but we don't like it there
If genuine dog owners have any suggestions that don't involve walking out into the countryside or into remote / solitary places, please do let us know! Thanks

If you want to walk in a park you've got two choices. The Priory or the field behind Tesco. I'm surprised that you wouldn't like country walks. Walking by the river on the railway land is beautiful. The Downs up by the golf course.

Thanks for both the suggestions. We do like country walks but not for early weekday mornings plus we can't let the dog off the leash out in the open as he could run off. He needs to have an off-leash run around and play with other dogs. It looks like we'll mostly be frequenting the Priory Park then! Such a shame that Lewes only has these options for dog owners who prefer enclosed parks.
Also, regarding behind Tesco, I thought that part of land was going to become part of the new Phoenix estate / North Street Quarter?!

No-one's mentioned Stanley Turner and the nature reserve immediately to the south of it. Easy access from the bottom of Cockshut Rd, near the Tennis Club. Convent Field (next to Priory Park) is full of dogs for yours to play with.

Thank you A Person! So Convent Field, Priory Park and Stanley Turner Recreation Ground and nature reserve close to it, all appear to be in the same sort of spot. It's handy to know there's plenty of space and dogs there.

Landport bottom - full of friendly dogs (and owners). Unfair to label Lewes as 'unfriendly' towards dogs - the parks that you name are either formal gardens or geared towards children/sport, so dog-free for a reason!

Local99 what makes you feel that i'm a "nob"? We're a young-ish couple looking to move to Lewes and seeking out places to walk our dog that aren't in remote places as we don't feel comfortable a) being in remote places alone and 2) letting our dog off in open land.
I don't think you and I have anything else to say to one another. Go and troll on someone else.

So you ask a question, but don't want to hear an answer you might not like. Good work.

Oh give them a break. All they wanted to know was where in town can they take their dog. They'll find their feet soon enough, and they'll soon get the confidence to explore our wonderful countryside with their dog.
