Lewes New School is a fee paying school. There are lots of good state schools

Actually, I heard that some of the parents can't afford the fees but the school aren't doing anything to enforce the payments, so provided your kid has a suitably poncy name and you promise to maybe pay some fees at some point perhaps in the future, it's essentially free.
The concept of sending young Tarquin to one of the exceptional state schools in town if you can't afford private education seems to be an entirely alien one to some people.
It's only a rumour though. Loose lips sink ships and all that.

For the record, the Lewes New School does not waive fees for parents who cannot afford to pay. It has a Helping Hand Fund to assist parents with school fees during difficult financial times. Also, for new families, there is a limited Bursary Scheme available. Furthermore, the school does not have any kids called Tarquin - although I do have a couple of friends with that name that are too old to attend... but maybe they'd actually benefit from going back to school, hmmmm
