Please can someone help. Every time I order a lager from the Lewes Arms people mumble "DFL", I've searched the acronym online and can't find a clear explanation. Can someone enlighten me?

Not being Lewes born I have always taken the DFL matter as a bit of humour but if Big Ben's is a true account then what unexciting, pitiful people are those in the Lewes community that believe in such drivel, what a sad life they must live.

Locals you're like the cornish who call visitors ants. I love a harveys but I'll have a lager when it suits me. Perhaps Ben is coming to the pub to socialise and be seen, whats wrong with courtesy to your fellow man.
Drink and be merry Ben its good here as are the people.

I would suggest not drinking in the Lewes Arms if you feel unwelcome. Plenty of other excellent boozers in town. The Lamb, the Elly & the Rights are all within staggering distance. And I`m sure that the customers in there would not be so precious about your choice of poison

What makes me laugh is that the VAST MAJORITY of people who live in Lewes weren't actually born here, or even originate from the area. Next time you're in the Lewes Arms BB ask around to see who's a true Lewes person, I think you'll be rather pleasantly surprised to find that you're in a "foreign" majority !!

I think you're probably Pete, I've been here over 10 years now and I'm getting grief. Enough is enough. Us "DFLs" are the ones keeping the overpriced economy of Lewes afloat. I was trying to make Harveys "my drink" but now I think I'll stick to the much more enjoyable European lagers.

Surely its the dfls that have created this overpriced economy here. Having been raised here there is no reasonable housing for young people of Lewes to live in because you've bumped up the expense on housing costs. Its ridiculous. Where's the social housing? Its all bought up by Londoners looking for somewhere fashionable to live and then they complain about the noise during bonfire night!?

Stop tarring all 'DFL's' with the same brush, the majority are earning an average salary and have moved to Lewes because they think the town is beautiful and want to get out of the scum infested city that is London. Housing costs will rise regardless, it is incredibly short sighted to lay the blame at the door of the DFLs. If you think all DFL's drive 4x4's and wear red trousers you are mistaken. Most are young families with children who just want to raise their kids in safe environment. Shame on you for creating this continual anti DFL tirade and making people feel bad for moving here when they just want to have a happy life.

Most seem to be of the ageing hipster variety rather than the sloane. Trendies who don't think the schools in Brighton are quite good enough and think Lewes has more of an alternative feel to it than most towns in the Home Counties.
I don't think of London as "scum infested" sounds like you've been reading the daily mail a bit too much. I loved London, loved living there, it's just implausibly expensive when you have a family. Plus i love the countryside round here, the Harvey's, bonfire and the people.

Oh and Big Ben if you think Stella etc are anything but mass produced chemical rubbish from a vat somewhere near Northampton you're gravely mistaken. They've never been near the continent in their life. The only place in Lewes where you can get a proper craft lager is the snowdrop, they've got proper Belgian and German beers on tap. They can be mentioned in the same breath as Harvey's, but not rubbish you're on about.
